van Velzen employs symmetry as both an aesthetic and neurobiological device. In Treetops (2001-2002), like mirror neurons, also create a double. Gloriously coloured in 'hyperreal hues', these intricate motifs are reminiscent of the patterned branching of brain structure itself.
