Susan Aldworth, Hinged Crucifix and Plinths (Whitehapel Gallery), 2002

Aldworth's work explores the nature of consciousness. The experience of observing her brain live on a monitor during a diagnostic brain scan triggered an ongoing fascination with the relationship between the physical brain and the sense of self.
In some of her work, she puts images of her own brain on display incorporating transparency as a metaphor for the exposed self.
